Storefront decorations kick off pride events
Village businesses are invited to participate in a decorating contest to celebrate Peak Pride returning to Sun Peaks.
The Kelowna-based event hits up ski towns each winter, bringing with it film screenings, live music, comedy shows, drag performers and even a pride parade down five mile.
Businesses who wish to participate are asked to put together their best pride display in their windows, in their shops or on their front desks, by Feb. 26, the first day of the event.
Judging will take place 2 p.m. on Feb. 28 with a prize supplied by Sun Peaks Yoga for the best entry.
Events will kick off Feb. 26 with a free, all ages, screening of Alone in the Game, a documentary which explores LGBTQ2+ athletes in all levels of sport. A panel will be held for discussion after the movie.
The next day live music will be highlighted with a show from QUSIC at Morrisey’s Public House. Feb. 28 will be host to an aprés event at Bottoms Bar & Grill before a comedy night at Morrisey’s.
Saturday, Feb. 29, starts with a pre-parade party at the Sunburst Bar + Eatery before the pride parade heads down five mile at 2:45 p.m. An aprés event will take place at the Upper Village Stage just after, all Saturday afternoon events are all ages and free.
That night Masa’s Bar + Grill will host drag performances and a DJ to wrap up the weekend.
“Peak Pride is an opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate pride and make lasting memories against the backdrop of beautiful, snow-covered mountains,” said Dustyn Baulkham, executive producer of Rebellious Unicorns Production Company, which hosts the event.
“By hosting events like Peak Pride, our mountain partners send a message to the LGBTQ2+ community and our allies that these are safe, inclusive and welcoming spaces for everyone regardless of race, religion, gender identity/expression, or sexual orientation.”
