Effective Wednesday, July 16 all campfires are prohibited in the Kamloops Fire Centre due to “high” and, in some cases, “extreme” fire danger ratings throughout the area. In accordance with this ban, Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality will be implementing a campfire ban.
Due to current dry, hot weather, natural wildfires are extremely aggressive and the introduction of human-caused wildfires could divert critical resources and crews that are responding to natural wildfires.
This ban prohibits all open fires of any size including, but not exclusive to, industrial burning, fireworks, tiki lanterns, burning barrels etc. Cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes with flames less than 15 centimeters are allowed.
Violators are subject to a $345 fine and anyone responsible for recklessly causing a wildfire may be fined up to $1 million and subject to three years in prison.
This prohibition will be in place until the public is notified otherwise.
To report a violation call 1-844-676-8477 or fill out a reporting form.
To report a wildfire call 1-800-663-5555 or #5555 on a mobile phone.
