For car enthusiasts, a beautiful backdrop is an essential part of showing off their wheels. Sun Peaks Resort is capitalizing on this aesthetic package, and the rides are rolling in.
Whether it’s owners of the latest automotive engineering, or collectors of vintage models, they don’t seem to mind passing a few cattle guards to get to the mountain.
“This is my second year at Sun Peaks and it’s great. Most of the B.C. chapter of the Corvette Club is here along with many
other Corvette owners from all over,” said ‘vette enthusiast, Merv Tompkins. “This is a great event that the Corvette Club puts on, they invite other clubs and enthusiasts from all over to attend.”
Over 65 Corvettes ascended the mountain in late August for the B.C. Corvette Club’s “Thunder Under the Sun” weekend. It offered a show and shine in the village as well as an autocross race.
“We were in Whistler before this . . . and it was very, very busy — too busy actually,” continued Tompkins. “While I noticed some shops here were closed, that might just be that we are not the traffic the owners are looking for compared to say winter time, but you know what, other than that Sun Peaks is really a perfect place for us to get together and show off our cars.”
Next up from September 20 to 22 is the “Run to the Sun” car gathering. This event, expecting to see 70 vehicles in the village, is open to all makes and models of classic cars. Spectators will be able to view rare Jaguars, Ferraris, MGs and more. The weekend features village entertainment, a show and shine and judging.
