I did four runs during my lesson last week. The more I ski, the more I realize that I’m no longer a beginner skier! It’s awesome!
As I sit in the office and witness yet another sporadic snowfall today, I realize that there’s literally just one week left to enjoy the snow on mountains.
I’m [...]

On Wednesday, the SPIN staff celebrated another issue off to the printer’s at Memories. Looking out the window at the skiers, it occurred to me that the run right outside was Gentle Giant. The first run I’ve ever been on here in Sun Peaks. I thought, I haven’t been on that run in such a [...]

It was a perfect day to ski. Blue skies and plenty of sunshine can lure me outside any day in spite of my dislike for the cold. Donata, a ski student from Italy, and I were leisurely following our ski instructor Hank down the run heading to Runaway Lane. At one point, he stopped, and [...]
Moving on up

While evaluating my skiing progress, I find that there seems to be a huge gap between Levels 1 to 3 and Level 4 and up. To move from Level 1 to Level 3, the necessary skill set follows a steady and gradual advancement. But when you get to the point where you transition from green [...]

The first couple of times I tried skiing, I headed out on the slopes with friends who also didn’t know how to ski. Yes, we had a group lesson prior to going up on the slopes, but it was a very big group and the lesson lasted for only 30 minutes. Needless to say, we [...]

Today, I skied with two wonderful individuals – ski instructor Dick Taylor and Rita from Burlington, Ont. I’ve met and spoken with Dick on several occasions while covering either the Bluebird Day Fund or the Sun Peaks Adaptive Sports but this was the first time I actually got to ski with him.
Rita was experiencing [...]
If there was no gravity…

At Toastmasters last night, I was asked to do an impromptu speech about what I would miss the most if there was no gravity.
I said I would miss having order in my life because with gravity, at least you know where things would be. For example, in the office, I know exactly where to find [...]
The disillusionment trap

“I’m still in Level 3.” That’s what went through my head as I started my lesson this morning.
If you’re a perfectionist, there’s no greater enemy than yourself. And I’ve been told many times that I tend to be that way. On one hand, it’s great because I tend to push myself more in order [...]

After feeling the crowd’s energy at the Torch Relay Celebration in Kamloops yesterday, I still feel like jumping up and down while belting Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling”.
It was truly a unique experience to be caught up in the moment with thousands of people celebrating the Olympics. For a moment, let’s put aside any [...]

Learning the basics of downhill skiing makes me wonder what the founder of the sport was thinking. For me, cross country skiing makes sense. It’s easy to see how it was created as a means of transportation back when people had to hunt for survival in the winter.
A quick search on Google and Bing didn’t [...]
