How can one be truly nostalgic without an accompanying soundtrack? The 90s are coming back strong — high waist jeans, Birkenstocks, jelly sandals and even Furbys are in the mainstream once again. And Sun Peaks will have the music to match.
Tribute and cover bands will take to the stage on July 18 and 19 in the new Sun Peaks Uncovered: Flashback Weekend, performing favourite pop songs from the 80s and 90s.
Drawing inspiration from the successful Retro Concert Weekend (August 16 to 19) which is now in its sixth year, organizers said the new festival aims to bring a softer pop experience as opposed to the rock tribute bands while replicating the signature lively atmosphere.
“We saw how successful Retro Weekend has become in just five or six years,” said Carrisa Hayes, events manager with Tourism Sun Peaks. “We’re really gearing this one towards the ladies, especially with the Interior Wellness Festival on the same day. It’s going to be a great girls’ getaway weekend.”
Kamloops duo, Ryan 7, made up of Mike Hilliard and Sabrine Weeks, will perform a set based on favourite hits of the 80s and 90s. Both seasoned veterans, these two have been performing on stages throughout North America for decades.
Award winning entertainer Bonnie Kilroe will channel musical icon Cher, “not-quite-there” body suit included, as part of her Celebrity Imposters one-woman-act. Kilroe has an extensive background performing in a variety of venues, including casinos and cruise ships around the world, and won Most Unique Act and Best Costume Female at the 2012 Sunburst Celebrity Impersonators and Tribute Artists Convention. She will also perform a set featuring the best of other 80s icons like Joan Jet, Blondie and Cyndi Lauper.
“She brings so much excitement and energy to the stage,” said Hayes. “We’re really looking forward to her getting the audience involved and going right before the final act of the night.”
Xtreme Radio, a Vancouver party band covering classic and modern hits, will end the night and Euphoria, a high energy Vancouver based band, closes the weekend with one set on Sunday.
Performances are planned from 1 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Saturday and starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
“We’re absolutely encouraging people to dress up in their best 80s and 90s gear for the festival,” said Hayes.
Participants will have opportunities to strut their stuff onstage as well, with a Classic Karaoke competition being held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Saturday, with retro prizes up for grabs. A Vintage Arcade Tournament will also be held in Sun Peaks Fun Factor on Saturday.
