Getting to know a farmers’ market favourite

Eriks MeatsOffering a wide range of handmade sausages and meats, it’s no surprise Erik’s Sausages and Meats is one of the most popular vendors at the Sun Peaks and Region Farmers’ Market each Sunday.

Run by German-born Erik Fuenders, the stall offers customers the whole hog when it comes to sausages — from wieners and bratwurst to pepperoni sticks, and everything in between. A sausage maker for more than 25 years, Fuenders is employed locally as a butcher in Kamloops, preparing his own products on the side, which he sells at the Kamloops and Sun Peaks Farmers’ Markets.

“I’m still making products to the German regulations, which prohibits the addition of any fillers, like wheat,” explains Fuenders.

As is the story for most farmers’ market vendors, sales are unpredictable and Fuenders admits the popularity of his products changes from week to week.

“One week the bratwurst might be the most popular,” he says. “The wieners are always popular with families and children, because they are high quality wieners. I have some spicy pepperoni and a very spicy hot bratwurst. There is a little bit for everybody and a little bit for every taste.”

Now in his second year at the Sun Peaks Farmers’ Market, Fuenders says he is enjoying the market atmosphere.

“People are much more relaxed when buying at the markets than at a store. There’s a lot of socializing, there are a lot of tourists and it’s great to meet new people and enjoy the fresh air in Sun Peaks,” he says.

The Sun Peaks Farmers’ Market is held in the village each Sunday from 9.30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
