Summer is the time for home entertaining and a more laidback lifestyle. This change of seasons is the perfect time to re-evaluate the look and feel of your living spaces.
A makeover doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. This year’s Home Tour professionals, Dena Hartling and Brandy Olson-Hevia, offered some suggestions on where to start.
If you have a bit of time on your hands, a fresh coat of paint may do the trick. Choosing the appropriate colour depends on how the room will be used and what look you’re trying to achieve. For example, green can be a great accent colour in the kitchen as it complements the colour of herbs, fruits and vegetables.
Decluttering is a must, not only to add more space but to make a room more inviting.
Hartling suggests moving or eliminating some items completely to change the look of a room.
However, in order to effectively declutter, you have to learn to “delete”.
“A lot of people keep stuff for sentimental value and it never gets used,” said Olson-Hevia. “It just sits there and it doesn’t look good. So you just have to start from scratch and start picking your favourite pieces and go from there.”
You can also breathe new life into old things by repurposing them, said Hartling. For example, old Mason jars can be used as vases or reinvented into light fixtures.
If you’re on a tight budget, spend it on a few choice accessories such as throws, cushions, candle holders or tablecloth to give oomph to an otherwise boring room.
With a bit of organization and a dash of creativity, your old living spaces can look new again. Summer party, anyone?
