The New Zealand team claimed a surprising, though deserved, victory in the 2015 Sun Peaks Family Cup, breaking a five-year winning streak by Australia, and marking the first time a team besides Australia or Canada has won the prestigious trophy.
The 2015 Family Cup race was held on Saturday, Jan. 10, and attracted more than 90 competitors from Canada, Australia and New Zealand, ranging in age from four-year-old Matthew Rauch (Youngest Male) and six-year-old Lilly Holly (Youngest Female) through to the Cup’s most experienced competitor, 81-year-old Wyn Jones.
Colin Brost, director of market development for Tourism Sun Peaks, said he was “super pleased” with the event.
“There was a great atmosphere up on the mountain, good numbers for all the events, the course was in great shape, and there was a strong turnout for the awards ceremony as well. Probably the best awards ceremony we’ve had yet.” Brost said.
“It’s something for us to build on as we head into the 10th annual Family Cup in 2016.”
Sun Peaks was well represented by the Currie family, with Duncan and sons Cameron and Euan winning top prize for the fastest family with an average run time of 43.19 seconds.
