Launching the summer season

Sun Peaks locals, businesses and visitors were kept well entertained over the resort’s Summer Kick-Off weekend, June 27 to 30.

Aidan Kelly, director of sales and marketing for Sun Peaks Resort Corporation, described the opening weekend as a success.

“We had a good number of people overall and Tourism Sun Peaks organized lots of activities which really added to the ambiance of the village. We’ve had some very positive feedback,” Kelly said.

The Joe Roberts Band and special guest Sylvain Vallee launched the first Music in the Plaza on the Upper Village stage, entertaining the audience with covers and original tunes before a power outage impacted much of the village, resulting in a quiet evening for visitors and businesses.

The crowds were back in force on Saturday to enjoy more entertainment, including family activities such as a bouncy castle, face painting and a rock climbing wall and the West Coast Lumberjack Show that once again proved popular, attracting a large audience to each of their three performances.

The 7th Annual Mountain of Beer and Chili Cook-Off was the standout event of the weekend with both the beer and chili awards taken home by Bottoms Bar and Grill.

“It’s a bit different from our normal chili. We really had to balance the flavours,” explained Birmingham. The unique chili included veal, pork, chorizo and dark chocolate and was paired with Okanagan Spring’s apricot-infused Summer Weizen, securing top beer honours.

Sunday brought the season’s first Sun Peaks and Region Farmers’ Market, with a variety of stalls showcasing regional produce, fresh food, arts and crafts, and unique gifts. Vendors commented they were pleased with the turnout despite uneven weather.

The Farmers’ Market will be held every Sunday until September 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
