Municipal purchase of utilities nears completion

A project started in late 2016 is nearing completion this January. Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality (SPMRM)  is wrapping up the acquisition of Sun Peaks Utilities Co. (SPUCL) from Sun Peaks Resort LLP (SPR).

With only minor details remaining, some utilities staff are moving into a newly renovated SPMRM office while others will remain in the previous space at the Burfield Lodge.

SPMRM chief administrative officer Rob Bremner said the cost of changes to the office was paid for from an administrative contingency and employing the additional staff is not expected to impact taxes for residents as SPUCL fees cover wages.

The impetus for the purchase was to lower costs and taxes long term. SPMRM can also apply for grants that would not be available to private SPR.

Once complete an asset management plan will be created, a necessity for most grant applications.
