New hours coming for Heffley Creek Landfill

TNRD_LogoThe Thompson-Nicola Regional District will open the Heffley Creek Eco-Depot on Oct. 8 as part of ongoing efforts to work towards more environmentally sound ways of solid-waste management.

The new facility will open on the same site as the Heffley Creek Landfill, at 7381 Sullivan Valley Rd., and along with the new facility, there will be changes to payment methods and hours.

Residents who use the Eco-Depot will now be able to pay tipping fees by debit or credit card in addition to TNRD Eco-Cards. Cash will no longer be accepted at the Heffley Creek Eco-Depot starting Oct. 8. Also, the Heffley Creek Eco-Depot has new hours of operation:

Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on Sunday and Monday).

Starting April 1 through Sept. 30, the Eco-Depot will be open Tuesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on Monday).

For area residents, the Heffley Creek Eco-Depot will be a more convenient way to manage their solid waste. A one-stop drop for most waste and recyclable materials, the facility makes it easy for residents to separate ecyclables and reusable materials from the waste stream before disposing of the residual in large bins destined for the landfill.

The Heffley Creek Eco-Depot will be equipped with scales, which are part of a new weight-based user strategy that is more accurate and equitable than the volume-based system that was previously employed at TNRD waste disposal andrecycling facilities. Tipping fees will now be based on a $60-per-tonne disposal rate with a minimum charge set at $1. The new rate system breaks down to six cents per kilogram.
