New structure for charity golf tournament

A new event is on the golf calendar this year, a little/big golf tournament in support of the Discovery Centre for Balanced Education.

“We’re changing it completely from past years, it’s going to be called Nancy Greene’s Little Big Golf Challenge, and it’ll be a 9-hole little partner/big partner alternate shot tournament,” explains event namesake Nancy Greene Raine. “We’re going to have fun contests on every hole; it’s going to be really neat with a B.C. Lions football toss and hockey puck shoots and things like that.”

Nancy Greene’s Little Big Golf Challenge will take place Saturday, September 8 on the front nine holes of the Sun Peaks Resort Golf Course.

“Because it’s a fundraiser for the school, we really want to get the kids involved, get them out there, get them having fun golfing,” explains Devin Knopf, events coordinator for Sun Peaks Resort. “So what we’ve done is taken the format of a father/son tournament and expanded: one little guy and one adult. It could be mother/daughter, father/son, could be anything. Everyone’s invited to come out, take part in the tournament and raise a bunch of money for the school.”

The tournament will begin at 2 p.m., and is preceded by a driving range competition at 1 p.m. A pasta and salad buffet, included in the $65 registration cost, will be served at 6 p.m. at Masa’s Bar and Grill.

“Everyone I’ve been talking to is super stoked and the B.C. Lions are going to send up a contest,” says Raine. “It will be golf, of course, but (also) fun events and activities for kids on the course which will be something quite special, I don’t think anyone’s ever done this before.”

Discovery Centre parents not playing in the tournament, and other interested volunteers, are encouraged to help out with each hole’s contest. Organizers would like to recruit approximately 20 volunteers.
