The Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipal (SPMRM) offices have seen a steady hum of activity lately with fall approaching and many community initiatives in Sun Peaks either in the works or on the drawing board.
The newly resurfaced tennis courts are now open for play, the sports field and playground expansion behind the sports centre is currently undergoing earth work and re-grading, and the new school portable is seeing the finishing touches for the start of the school year.
Work on the NHL-size ice surface has been put forward to the spring as the municipality is still working on obtaining 4 hectares (12 acres) of land from the province for community green space/recreation area. This parcel, located near the P5 parking area, is slated to house the hockey rink, a soccer field, ball diamonds and a skate park. It’s also the possible site for a permanent school down the road.
The Valley Trail has been repaired in many areas with new benches and garbage containers to be installed prior to winter.
The Sun Peaks Health Centre is still in the planning stages and will be put to a public referendum once plans and drawings are completed.
In September, the SPMRM will be taking over the road maintenance and snow removal on Sun Peaks roads and are currently in negotiations with local contractors and looking for staff.
On the business side, municipal staff is still working on the final wording of the Short Term Rentals Bylaw and are also meeting soon with TNRD staff to discuss the feasibility of possibly extending fire protection outside the current municipal boundaries. Also in the works is the completion of an Official Community Plan (OCP) in accordance with the provincial legislation regarding municipal incorporations.
The 2012 Sun Peaks Municipal Annual Report is now on the municipal website and the next regular council meeting is planned for Monday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
