Smoke alarms work, but not forever.
Research has shown that smoke alarms become less effective as they age, and research has also shown that most fire deaths in North America occur in homes without functioning smoke alarms.
To ensure smoke alarms continue to protect your family they should be tested regularly and replaced at least every 10 years. As many homes in Sun Peaks are now more than 10 years old, the volunteers of Sun Peaks Fire Rescue have initiated an aggressive fire prevention program. They plan to visit the home of every Sun Peaks resident over the next five years with the aim of testing and replacing non-functioning smoke alarms.
Volunteer firefighters will go door-to-door booking appointments for smoke alarm testing. They’ll be knocking on doors at the west end of the municipality on Tuesday, August 27 between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, August 31 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
