If all goes as Tri 1 Events plans, September 28 and 29, 2013 should be a very busy, sweaty and muddy weekend at Sun Peaks.
Although the specifics of the race course are kept secret until race day, we know that the Spartan Beast race on September 28 will combine 12 miles of trail running with a series of obstacles which can include jumping over fire, climbing eight foot walls and crawling through mud.
On September 29 competitors can brave the Spartan Sprint three mile course, and kids can take on the Spartan Kids Adventure Race.
The day-long events will culminate with a festival featuring competitions, awards, music, a beer garden and an after-party.
“Our mission is to get everyone off the couch and into the outdoors, and we’re excited to be bringing this event to Sun Peaks for the first time,” says Dean Stanton, race director for Spartan Race Western Canada.
Spartan Race was voted Outside magazine’s best obstacle race in 2012. In 2013 there will be more than 60 races in seven countries across three continents and organizers expect more than 500,000 people to sign up to test their mettle.
“The unique obstacle course(s) demand every ounce of strength, ingenuity and animal instinct you thought you lost three generations ago,” says Joe Desena, Spartan Race founder.
Desena doesn’t want to scare potential participants away, though. He says that the races can appeal to everyone, from seniors to kids, men and women.
“Spartan Races are designed for all participants, beginners to hardcore warriors and marathon runners alike, to have fun and cross the finish line,” Desena continues. “You need a little physical conditioning and a taste for some adventure. This isn’t an extreme sporting event that will scare people away. It’s about the fun, getting dirty, getting down in the mud—something exciting and new.”
