The tenth season of hockey under the lights in Sun Peaks comes to a wrap Feb. 28 as Sun Peaks Hockey League prepares for their championship finals.

Heading into Thursday’s finals in the novice division is the Ugly Pucklings who will take on the Flying Dutchman.

“The Ugly Pucklings were actually a third-seeded team and in the last two weeks moved up to second seat and won their semi-final last week,” said Mike Billheimer, league organizer.

The matchup is set to be an exciting game as the Ugly Pucklings are the only team to defeat the Flying Dutchman this season.

“It should actually be quite an exciting final because it is the one team in the league that has the best chance of upsetting the Flying Dutchman for the end of the season,” he said.

In the intermediate final, A&W Square Root Beers will take on Off in the Woods for the 7:45 pm showdown.

“I really couldn’t tell you who the favourite in this game is going to be because both teams have had really dominate games in the semifinals, they both won by large margins,” said Billheimer.

In the semifinals, A&W defeated their season rivals Mid Ice Crisis 10-2 while Off in the Woods earned their spot in the final match by defeating S#!+hawks 8-3.

“A&W is not the number one seeded but they had an incredible game last week. If they can keep that momentum going it could be anyone’s game for the intermediate final.”

Before puck drops on the final games, the league will hold a skills competition starting at 6 p.m. for league members to have one final night of competition.

“We’re going to set up some goal scoring challenges on goalies in the nets. We’re going to do some stickhandling drills and some skating drills, as well a bit of a speed competition,” said Billheimer.

Puck drops for the novice match at 7 p.m. With fire pits, hot chocolate, and baked goods it’s set to be a great night to come out and support local hockey.
