Sun Peaks mayor Al Raine has been appointed member of the inaugural Destination BC board, the body soon to be given charge of tourism marketing in B.C.
Raine was humble about the appointment and was optimistic about the composition of the board.
“I’m encouraged by the strength and commitment of the other board members . . . I think the board is very strong,” Raine said.
“One of the things that’s slightly different, from what I can see, none of the board members are there to represent tourism regions or tourism organizations . . . and I think that can bring a fresh look. We can be thinking a little bit outside the box and hopefully that comes up with innovative and some clever thoughts about how we market and sell B.C.”
The inaugural board consists of nine members with industry and outside experience including Raine, Robert Pratt of Coast Hotels and Resorts, Susan Tamiko Doi of Whistler Blackcomb, Loring Phinney of Bell Canada and Laird M. Miller of London Drugs.
The Board of Directors of the Tourism Industry Association of BC applauded the announcement.
“We’re extremely pleased with the calibre of the business people who have indicated their willingness to serve on this first Board,” said Chair Lana Denoni, “because it’s these individuals who will be accountable to the tourism industry and tax-payers for the success of this new provincial marketing corporation.”
The application process was open to the general public with almost 130 applicants identified. The board was chosen by the Minister’s Council on Tourism and the Tourism Industry Association of BC Provincial Destination Marketing Organization Task Force.
Destination BC, an industry led crown corporation, was announced in November 2012 almost three years after similar predecessor Tourism BC was scrapped. Destination BC will take charge of tourism in the province from April 1.
