Sun Peaks Adaptive Sports Tripled in Participants for 2012-13 Winter Season
Future paralympians from across Canada will come to Sun Peaks for the 39th Annual CADS (Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing) National Festival – six days encompassing two major events from March 24 to 29, 2013.
Returning to Sun Peaks for the third time, over 30 CADS athletes and over 50 instructors and coaches will attend the festival which offers skill improvement and race development to skiers and riders with a disability.
“CADS Ski Improvement and Race Development Festival like Sun Peaks’ terrain and grooming as well as the small, friendly, accessible village and the official Accessibility Guide,” says Dick Taylor, founder of Sun Peaks Adaptive Sports.
The festival features camps with some of the best para-athletes in Canada, including Josh Dueck, Alpine Canada team member who was the first person to complete a back-flip in a sit ski.
During the festival, Sun Peaks’ slopes will be the testing ground for the Canadian Para-Alpine Championships where provincial racers will compete alongside national and international athletes. The races will take place on OSV ski run on March 28 and 29.
Perfect for spectators, the CADS Guestimation race takes place on Sun Catcher ski run at 10:00 am on March 28. Participants race one timed run and then try to guess the time of their next two runs. Whichever races finishes closest to their guessed time is the winner.
“It’s really about consistency,” says Sharon Tremblay, president of Sun Peaks Adaptive Sports. “They are racing against themselves and get to have the excitement of a crowd cheering them on.”
Sun Peaks Adaptive Sports has more than tripled in participants since last season, encompassing over 85 people in the roles of students, on-hill volunteers and board members.
“We started a great volunteer recruitment and recognition strategy which has increased our numbers this year,” says Tremblay. “While teaching is an important part, there is also an inclusiveness and lifestyle component which is important to our participants.”
