Swimsuit season comes early

After a successful first run, the Bikinis for Breast Cancer event will hit Sun Peaks once again on March 29.

According to Karen Guidos, the event’s organizer, last year’s participants went above and beyond her initial hopes.

“The first annual event at Sun Peaks was a huge success last year and everyone had so much fun. We had a total of 12 participants but still managed to raise over $11,000, which was well above my expectations,” says Guidos.

Introducing the event to Fernie Alpine Resort this year, Guidos has upped the event count to four — three in Canada and one in New Zealand.

Stripping down to their bikinis in winter temperatures is a daring way for women to make their presence known on the hill, and Guidos says Bikinis for Breast Cancer is as much about breast cancer fundraising as it is about increasing awareness about the disease.

This year, Guidos is hoping to match the donations from last year and possibly reach $15,000.

“Bikinis for Breast Cancer started in 2009 and, to date, we’ve raised over $120,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation,” she says.
