When I wrote You Know You Live in Sun Peaks When… for my blog, I never imagined the hype that my writing would create. I shared the blog link on Facebook before going to bed one night, and by the next morning, it had over 90 reads. By lunchtime it had catapulted to 130 reads, and by the end of the day I had reached over 200 people. The next few days were my 15 minutes of fame in our small town. I had everyone from the community of Sun Peaks, former and present, say to me, “That was you who wrote that?” or “If you keep this up, you’ll want everyone living here!”
Then I got the e-mail that brings me here. SPIN’s editor asked me to write my own column about living in Sun Peaks for the newsmagazine. I was excited! But the excitement quickly turned into fear. I thought to myself, What if they don’t like what I have to say? What if I offend someone in the community? After all, we’re not just a community, we’re a family.
I met with the SPIN team, and they could tell right away that I was nervous. I don’t know what gave it away. Perhaps it was the look on my face that resembled that of a small child performing on the night of a school play? That was probably it. In the end, they calmed me down and told me that all would be fine.
I went for it and here I am, not too long after publishing my blog post that became a hit overnight, and I’m writing for the local newspaper!
So, dear readers, I hope I can highlight in my writing a sense of what makes living here so special — everything from the random nights with friends at the local pubs, to the sense of family and home away from home that our small community brings. Who knows? Maybe my writing will inspire a family to move here. Whichever way it goes, I can’t wait to share with you all my adventures of this magical place I call home.
