13-year-old Charlie Roberts didn’t let only having four training days on an official mogul course this season  stop him from excelling at the Junior National Moguls Championship in Lac Beauport, Que., March 13 to 17. The Sun Peaks Freestyle Club team member was able to earn a top ten finish, placing eighth overall in the single Mogul competition.

“My first run in the single Moguls I thought it was going to be my better run because my turns felt better and my jumps were a bit better it wasn’t as fast as my second run. My second run I tried to go really fast. I ended up scoring better because it was so fast. It was like two seconds faster or something like that,” said Roberts.

Heading to Quebec early, he was able to get two full training days in before the competitive events began. It was his first time training with an experienced mogul coach.

“It was really nice because I’m used to coaches telling me what they think to do but she really knew what she was talking about and you could tell she’s been doing it for a long time,” he said.

At the start of training, Roberts told his coach, Tanya Callon from Apex Mountain, what tricks he wanted to land, a 360 and 720, and  worked on those with her advice.

“She was standing at the bottom after I finished every run she would tell me what to do better and the main thing was for me was to stay with shin pressure and stay forward don’t fall back.”

Despite good training days, Roberts admitted he didn’t believe he would earn a top ten finish.

“After the first and second training day, I wasn’t expecting to get top 10 because there was a lot of crazy kids there. It was ridiculous,” he said. He explained some kids were pulling backflips and back full’s to cork 720 off the jumps.

“The biggest thing I learned was probably don’t compare yourself to the other kids. Just you do you. Don’t compare yourself because you’ll just get scared and then crash,” said Roberts.

Now back home in Sun Peaks, Roberts is getting ready for his final competition of the season in the Timber Tour circuit at Silver Star Mountain Resort March 28 to 31. Looking ahead to next season Roberts is committed to qualifying for the Junior Nationals again for Moguls and Slopestyle.
