Sun Peaks’ village will transform into an urban playground on March 16 when 5Forty Ski, Board and Skate shop hosts Sun Peaks’ first urban rail jam in the village.
Urban riding involves snowboarding or skiing on features in a town or city, similar to skateboarding. Features can include rails, stairs, tables, embankments, boxes, seats and more.
“There’s $5,000 in prizing and $1,000 cash (for the winner),” explained 5Forty owner, Scotty Janzen, who added that snowboards and outerwear would be also be part of the prizes.
Contestants will style to the tunes of local DJ Dom Koric.
“There’ll be a party in front of (5Forty Café and Deli) with free burgers. The prize giveaways will be at Morrisey’s pub afterward,” Janzen said.
Up to 75 skiers and snowboarders will get the chance to pull out their steazy moves at this event. Registration is at 2:30 p.m. on event day, and the main event kicks off at 4 p.m. The rail jam is free to enter and open to riders who can confidently ride blue level terrain park features.
