Weekend on the Mountain: July 28 to 30

The 2017 Alpine Blossom Festival and Summer Concert takes place from Friday to Sunday, bringing with it a plethora of other fun activities and events. Here’s what is going on.


From 12 to 5 p.m., Okanagan Helicopter Alpine Tours will be offering short helicopter tours around the mountains, for a different look at some of the scenic views Sun Peaks offers. The helicopter rides will also be offered Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. A six minute ride is $45 plus GST, and a 12 minute ride is $75 plus GST. Rides are on a first come first serve basis, and the helicopter can take three guests at a time. Those interested in participating should meet at the Sun Peaks Sports Field behind the Sports Centre.

J.K. Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” a spin-off film of the Harry Potter series, will be shown by the Green Art Festival at dusk in the Clock Tower Square. The second race in the 2017 Gravity Cup, the summer race series based around the Mountain Cross Carts, will happen from 4 to 6 p.m. The fastest time of the day will be awarded a prize and also be in contention for the title of Grand Champion at the end of the summer. $15 will get you two laps and a beer or a non-alcoholic option at Masa’s.

Friday is the last day of the Family Week events. From 1 to 3 p.m. will be a sing along and story time with visits from two princesses, and from 3 to 5 p.m. there is free entry to the pool at the Sports Centre.


Kelly Funk Photography is hosting the Mountains of Colour photography workshop from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required for this detailed course on photography and alpine photography. The group will take a leisurely hike to an alpine meadow where participants will learn different techniques for capturing the flowers at the height of their bloom. At 9 a.m. start the day off with a yoga class with Mollie Sommer at the Clock Tower Square. No registration is required.

Sun Peaks Fire Rescue will have one of their engines on display in the Lower Village from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Kid Zone bouncy castle and activities as well as the ParticipACTION Zone in the Upper Village will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

An Alpine Blossom Art Exhibit will be on display in the lower lobby of the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Plenty of local art of many different styles will be shown.

Chimera Theatre’s popular interactive medieval performance Knights of the Sun are hosting an interactive performance from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Clock Tower Square.

Sun Peaks artist Liz Derksen is hosting an Alpine Blossom Paint Workshop in her studio on Fairways Dr. Classes will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. A price of $35 and pre-registration is required to participate. To book, visit sunpeaksresort.com/events.

The Okanagan World of Reptiles will be presenting a hands on, interactive show on the Upper Plaza Stage from 3 to 4 p.m.

A summer concert finishes off Saturday as Okanagan band Devon Coyote opens for Jesse Roper. Devon Coyote is a band that prides themselves on their fusion of roots, rock and blues. Jesse Roper, who was born in Victoria, has toured the West Coast and Canada performing his Canadian blues and rock music. Devon Coyote starts at 5:30 p.m., and Jesse Roper kicks off at 7 p.m., playing until 8:30 p.m. Afterwards, Morrisey’s Public House continues their summer music series with Sara Beatty starting at 9 p.m.


The Sun Peaks Farmers’ Market will have their biggest market of the season from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with over 30 vendors expected. Musician Rory White will be performing from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Upper Village Stage.

Another class of outdoor yoga will be held at 9 a.m. at the Clock Tower Square with Sonja Foss.

The KidZone bouncy castle and ParticipACTION zone both open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A roving band of clowns will be around the area to entertain and perform.

The sixth annual Reach the Peak hike starts at the base of the Sunburst Chair at 9 a.m. Participants will be hiking to the summit of Tod Mountain. Hikers will be joined by Nancy Greene Raine and a coveted list of Sun Peaks “Summiteers.” All that’s required to participate is a valid hiking lift ticket or season pass.

Knights of the Sun’s medieval tournament theatre show will go on as scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon. Tickets are available for $25 at Central Reservations.
