A new community group is hosting their first fundraising event this weekend, June 6.

The Sun Peaks Community Garden was formed to create a space for community members to grow their own produce, add more green space, increase local food security and create a way for the community to socialize.

Still in the early stages of their project, the group is hosting a plant sale with various hardy, flowering annuals such as petunias, marigolds, asters and geraniums as well as cedar window boxes, window box brackets, potting soil, lemonade and cookies.

The money raised will go towards deer proof fencing once a location is secured, installing irrigation and building raised garden beds.

Some items will be available for sale online prior to the event at the Sun Peaks Community Garden Facebook group and event.

Sales will take place June 6 at the upper village stage from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Social distancing recommendations will be followed and only e-transfers will be accepted for payment.

Business supporters include Sun Peaks Stables, Ohana Deli Market, Gilbert Smith Forest Products Ltd., Thompson Rivers University Horticulture, Baby Doh’s, Vertical Cafe and Lyons Landscaping.
