11th Annual Gala raises more than ever

The Sun Peaks Education Society (SPES) and the Sun Peaks Speed Skiing Club (SPSSC) are delighted with the success of the 11th Annual Sun Peaks Firefighters’ Gala in November.

Together the two non-profit organizations raised nearly $35,000 through donations and live and silent auctions, a record to date.

Sun Peaks resident Melissa McKenzie spearheaded a team of SPES volunteers who collected auction items for the education group, and ran the live and silent auctions in conjunction with members from the SPSSC.

“Special thanks to Melissa,” says Barb Kupferschmidt Linder, SPES president. “Her awesome organizational skills and team of volunteers (made) this event so successful (for the SPES).”

Also announced during the gala was a donation of $3,000 to the SPES from the Mibroc Group, as well as $2,000 from Powder Ventures Excavations and $650 from the O’Toole family. Those funds will be split between the SPES and SPSSC.

“A huge thank you to all involved in this year’s fundraiser,” said Adam Earle, SPSSC president.

“While our group is small in comparison to past recipient non-profit groups, we really pulled out all the stops to make this event a success. With the knowledge that the SPES group brought to the table from previous years, it made all the difference in us being successful as first time benefactors,” said Earle. “We hope that we can be involved in the future and would truly like to thank everyone involved for their generous support.”

Funds raised at the event will help the SPES to cover operating costs for the Grades 6 to 12 students.
The speed skiing club will allocate their share of the proceeds to organizing the FIS World Cup Speed Skiing races at Sun Peaks in March, 2013.
