Municipality information

muni notes logo for webChief Administrative Officer for Sun Peaks Municipality, Rob Bremner, explains that it’s business as usual in the municipal office.

Mayor Al Raine is working with the provincial government to secure land for the Sun Peaks ice rink project explained Bremner.

“(The ice rink is) still on the agenda to go,” confirmed Bremner. “We might only get part of it done this year and finished in the spring next year but it’s still in the go, although obviously we don’t want to go too far until we actually purchase the property.”

The tennis courts have been maintained, and players will be treated with new surfacing in “US Open” blue.

And, on the education front, a new portable school building has been purchased by the municipality to bring the tally of classrooms atop the Village Platter to four.
“It’s coming up from Sicamous in mid-August,” said Bremner. “The site’s been excavated, we just have to do our connections and then (Grether Contracting) will start doing the exterior — it’ll be ready for the kids to use by the time school starts.”

Work is still ongoing in establishing an Official Community Plan for Sun Peaks (OCP). An OCP is a regulatory document required by the provincial government that guides land use and development decisions, but can include a broader range of policies to guide most local government decisions. Leading toward the OCP is work on the municipality’s sustainability plan.
“We’ve just been getting the final drafts of all the pieces,” said Bremner. “Council will have a chance to view it and it will go before council in the start of September.”

Sun Peaks will also officially take over the maintenance of the community roads in September. Work continues to be done in preparation of the transition. At the time of print the road maintenance tender had not been awarded.

The next municipal meeting is at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 19.
