Annual firefighters’ gala

It’s time to bring out the formal wear. The Sun Peaks Volunteer Firefighter Society is hosting the Sun Peaks Firefighters’ Annual Charity Gala on Nov. 20.

This year, the beneficiaries are the Sun Peaks Alpine Club and the Sun Peaks Education Society.

One of the highlights of the event is the live and silent auction where people can try to outbid each other for a good cause. Proceeds from the auction are split between the two local charities. The volunteer firefighter society also raises their operating expenses through the event.

“We’re very happy to be chosen as a beneficiary,” said Sun Peaks Education Society chair Maria Cannon. “We’ve had amazing support so far and we’re very appreciative of all the support we’ve had at this point, but the Firefighters’ Ball is definitely one of the major fundraising events for us and it’s very important to us. It’s important for the continued operation of the Discovery Centre and the education of the children here on the mountain.”

The Sun Peaks Alpine Club has been a past beneficiary of the event, and the children enrolled in the program are already reaping the results.

“An event like this in the last two years is a large part of what gave us the ability to hire a program director like John Crichton,” said SPAC president Daimion Applegath.

Applegath said the proceeds will go directly to the development of SPAC’s youth programs.

The event will start off at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails at the Delta Sun Peaks Ballroom followed by a three-course dinner and a dance. Attendees will be treated to live music by The Luv Shack band from Vancouver.

The gala is an annual fundraising event for the Volunteer Firefighter Society and their chosen charities. This is also an event where the Volunteer Firefighter Society is honoured for their work at the resort.

Tickets are $80 plus HST and can be purchased through Central Reservations until Nov. 17 or online at www.sunpeaksresort.com. Phone 1-800-807-3257 for more information.
