Avoiding a lemon

We’ve all heard the horror stories – the perfectly good-looking car that breaks down almost immediately after paying for it.

This scenario can happen to anyone, so the Ministry of Justice, Consumer Protection BC and the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of BC (VSA) have provided five basic tips consumers can use to help avoid problems when purchasing a new or used car.

Buy from a licensed dealer. Consumers have fewer protections under law when buying from a private seller, unlicensed dealer, or curber. You can search for licensed dealers at sunpeaksne.ws/CARdlr.

Get everything in writing. Make sure all transaction details are documented in writing and you understand the terms. This includes the deposit agreement, purchase agreement and any warranty contract. Always read the contract and the fine print.

Know how to spot an unlicensed dealer. They can be a risk because some don’t following consumer protection laws. To check for an unlicensed dealer see:  sunpeaksne.ws/BUYsaf.

Get the right inspections and reports. If you’re buying a used vehicle, make sure you get copies of recent mechanical inspections and vehicle history reports. These will document the vehicle’s current condition, lien status, accident history and more.

Get help. To find out about rights and responsibilities as a consumer when purchasing a car in B.C. go to:

A few hours of research, or a few extra dollars spent on an inspection report, could mean the difference between a broken down lemon and getting your money’s worth.
