Bear aware season

For residents of Sun Peaks and the surrounding area September marks the start of hungry bear season as local bruins start their quest for calories before denning in November.

Being bear aware is about being bear proof. Once a bear has tasted garbage or food around your house it will come back year after year as it doesn’t forget a good food source. Pick all fruit and vegetables, store your garbage in a secure bear proof receptacle or freeze it before going to the dump, and never give a bear a chance to find food around your home.

Over 800 black bears are killed each year in B.C. because of conflicts between people and bears.
