Liz Derksen would often visit the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) gallery on Vancouver’s Granville Island and admire the work on display.
“I’ve been going to that gallery for years, thinking, maybe one day . . .”
In February, Derksen was “very proud and excited” to find out two pieces of her art would be on display in the gallery, after being accepted by the FCA jury for an exhibition titled Artists Choice, showcasing a range of Canadian artists in their chosen mediums from February 3 to 14.
For Derksen, it’s validation of her success and personal development over the past few years.
“I’ve always painted on and off, but in the last couple of years I decided to really start painting images from my own mind, and it’s been going very well.
“I’m very proud to have been selected. It’s really exciting for me to be in a big city show.”
It’s just the start of what’s set to be a great year for Derksen, who will feature in another exhibition in May at Vancouver’s Hycroft Gallery, alongside Abbotsford artist Myrtle-Ann Rempel.
Derksen has been visiting Sun Peaks for the past 10 years, but only recently made the move to becoming a permanent resident. Since then, she’s become an active member of Art Zone Sun Peaks and has gotten involved with the Kamloops art community.
Derksen describes her art as “landscapes from her imagination” and said she’d received a lot of positive feedback on her paintings: “The most common thing I hear is that my paintings make people smile.”
A selection of Derksen’s paintings, prints and greeting cards are on display at Alpine Images.
