 | February 4, 2013

Basic CMYKThe heat will be on B.C.’s students when Burn Awareness Week, hosted by the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, takes place on from February 3 to 9.

The aim of the program is to teach children to be responsible for their own safety and be aware of potentially harmful situations.

Captain Colin Cannon of Sun Peaks Fire Rescue (SPFR) confirmed that SPFR will be running classes for the students at Sun Peaks.

“I’m teaching three lessons (to the students),” said Cannon. “(We) talk about prevention and what happens if (a fire emergency) does happen. We (teach) first aid too.”

Cannon added that students will be taught about problem areas like safety around hot liquids, about fire alarms, and how to properly treat burns at home or decide when to go to the hospital.

B.C. firefighters have also created a Burn Awareness Week program on their website that can be accessed by anyone, and includes safety tips, activity sheets, quizzes, colouring pages and videos.

A poster contest is also being held, and each participant will receive a prize. Cash prizes will be awarded to winning students’ schools.
