Prince George will be hosting the 2015 Canada Winter Games. The announcement was made this morning by Premier Gordon Campbell with Tom Quinn, chairman of the Canada Games Council at a ceremony held 9:30 a.m. at the Jack Poole Plaza in Vancouver.
Kelowna, Prince George and Kamloops (in a joint bid with Sun Peaks) were the three remaining finalists.
“The Kamloops/Sun Peaks bid was comprehensive and planned very well. The commitment and integration between local government, community, and sport groups was exceptional. While being very disappointed, I feel strongly that we did our best. I would like to thank and congratulate the many Sun Peaks businesses and residents that helped with the bid and selection committee visits,” said Tourism Sun Peaks President Christopher Nicolson in an e-mail sent out Friday afternoon following the announcement.
Over 700 people viewed the live online broadcast of the event. Online viewers were allowed to post their comments on a live chat while watching. In the digital chatter that ensued leading up to the official announcement, supporters of Kamloops and Prince George dominated the chat in cheering for their respective cities and psyching out the competition.
The event was held with the Olympic flame cauldron as the backdrop. Olympian and speed skater Catriona LeMay Doan was the emcee.
