A Honda Accord rolled over down a 45-foot embankment approximately 20 km from Sun Peaks New Year’s Eve at around 8:45 a.m. The incident occurred on the south side of Tod Mountain Road.
The 20-year-old female driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was taken via ambulance to the Royal Inland Hospital with minor injuries. The driver was unaware of what caused her to go off the road.
This is the latest of a number of recent accidents occurring either near or on the road heading to Sun Peaks, which includes two car crashes during Christmas week. The first crash occurred on Highway 5 close to Heffley Creek resulting in a fatality. The other crash caused a power outage on Christmas Day after the vehicle hit a power pole near Hitch and Rail Resort in Heffley Creek.
“The common cause for accidents at this time of year is driving too fast for road conditions,” said Const. Pat Nagy, RCMP Media Relations officer. “Drivers are fooled by the mild weather we experience after a cold spell. When the weather warms up to near freezing to just above freezing as opposed to -20 C, it doesn’t mean that the roads are totally melting and free of ice. These conditions make for ideal black ice conditions and drivers are strongly advised to slow down and give themselves extra time to arrive safely.”
Drivers are advised to use winter tires and to monitor their speed to avoid any accidents especially with poor road conditions and reduced visibility in the winter.
