The Sun Peaks Alpine Club (SPAC) were in action this weekend at Revelstoke Mountain Resort. Despite a conservative start both the U12’s and U14 athletes were able to crack the top 10.
“I don’t know if there was some nerves or people were skiing just a little bit more tentatively on the track here, (it’s) a little bit steeper than what we normally train,” said SPAC U14 head coach Sam Fournier.
Day one of the Giant Slalom competition saw a little bit of fresh snow that once cleared revealed a good, hard surface for the races according to Fournier. In the U12 girls division SPAC athletes Peyton Devlin and Gabi Dinn secured top 10 finishes, Devlin taking fourth with a time of 1:03:78 and Dinn in seventh with a time of 1:03.94.
For the U12 boys Douglas Hunter, Gavin Johnson, and Avery Tymchyna each earned a spot in the top 10. Tymchyna was just off top five with a time of 1:00:52 he finished sixth overall. Both Hunter and Johnson finished in the top five with Hunter taking silver with a time of 58.54 and Johnson finishing fourth.
Fournier was impressed with the U14 girls who for the most part were able to finish their runs throughout the weekend. Rachel Blakeney and Chloe Hurst each had a top 10 finish on day one, Blakeney’s 57.58 run in race one earned her 10th while Hurst placed 10th in race two.
Jaelynn Todd’s hard work this season showed as she finished sixth in race one and ninth on day two.
U14 Jameson Jensen’s performance on Sunday earned Fournier’s praise recognizing his hard work. She said he worked hard for his eight place finish and added it was nice to see him in the top 10. Another standout of the weekend was Joshua Jerstad, who had multiple top 10 finishes.
“He was working really hard throughout all his races, had awesome inspections and overall just worked really hard throughout the weekend and was thinking about what we’ve been talking about through the season,” said Fournier. “ It showed in his races.”
Next up for the SPAC Racers will be the Western Ski Cross Finals at Big White Mountain Resort, Friday, March 8.
