Lower student numbers at the Sun Peaks Elementary and the Discovery Centre for Balanced Education mean that the school will phase down to two teachers for the 2015-16 school year.
Kirsten Flinn, member of the Sun Peaks Education Society (SPES) said Grade 2/3 teacher, Colleen Greer, will be retiring after this school year and will not be returning to Sun Peaks Elementary.
“She brought a lot of great experience to the school and she’ll be missed. We thank her and wish her well in her next adventure,” Flinn said.
The elementary make-up will be a K-3 class, taught by Lynn Maartman, while Cindie Hryhirchuk will continue with Grade 4-6.
“It’s still a great student to teacher ratio, with around 20 students per classroom,” Flinn said.
“If enrolment increases in future years, the teacher count will be readdressed.”
Sun Peaks Elementary principal, Deanna Brady, will also be leaving at the end of the school year, after being transferred to a position in Kamloops.
Flinn praised Brady’s work with the school district, the municipality, Sun Peaks Resort LLP and SPES to build solid relationships with the community since the school opened in 2012.
There is no confirmation on who will take Brady’s place.
