For as long as she can remember, Sun Peaks racer Elli Terwiel has had her sights set on World Cup glory and Olympic Gold and this season she’s one step closer to her dream.
Terwiel recently finished 17th in a FIS World Cup slalom event Maribor, Slovenia, her second 17th place finish (and personal World Cup best result) this year.
“For Elli, the first run was really, really good — it was like, ‘Wow.’ That was great to see,” said Canadian women’s team head coach Hugues Ansermoz. “The second run was difficult for her but she did a good job and she can be very, very happy with her result.”
Terwiel’s previous World Cup best was a 23rd place finish in Semmering, Austria earlier this season, giving her three top-30 FIS World Cup finishes this season.
The community of Sun Peaks recently held a fundraiser for Terwiel in an effort to assist her family with the huge cost of racing on the World Cup tour, and getting to the 2014 Olympics. Over 120 people attended raising over $3,000 towards Terwiel’s golden dreams.
To say this Sun Peaks Alpine Club alumnus has a busy schedule is an understatement. When Terwiel’s not chasing her racing dreams around the globe with the Canadian Alpine Ski Team she’s racing in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) events for the University of Vermont. In 2012 she won the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association Rookie of the Year award, NCAA double team all-American, and with her university teammates won the NCAA title. She was also the overall North American Slalom champion on the NorAm circuit. She recently won a NCAA slalom race in Lake Placid.
Terwiel’s next FIS World Cup slalom event will be held in Schladming, Austria beginning February 5.
