Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipal (SPMRM) council will discuss a framework for a municipal bylaw regarding retail cannabis sales at their regular council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

The Canadian Federal government will vote June. 7 as to whether or not Bill C-45, The Cannabis Act, will be passed and provincial and local governments are preparing themselves to regulate the sale of cannabis.

Should Bill C-45 be passed the resort municipality of Sun Peaks will have control over where retailers may operate, restrictions on public use of cannabis, as well as the ability to ban sales altogether in the community.

Questions outlined in Tuesday’s council meeting agenda will discuss issues arising from a potential bylaw, including where council would allow retailers, if they should banning smoking in the village core as well as business license fees and justification.

If Bill C-45 is passed legal sales of marijuana would not begin until late summer or early fall with the federal government placing limits on the amount of non-medicinal cannabis a person may possess.
