(CLARIFICATION ON THE OPENING DAY: Meeting place is at the Village Day Lodge at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 15. The group will then walk up Gentle Giant together to the schoolhouse. The official opening starts at 10 a.m.)
No hype was necessary when the new Sun Peaks Discovery Centre opened its doors to its first group of students this September, but it was a major victory celebrated among parents in the fledgling community and the communities around it.
In the space of a few months, the parents formed an official education society, created an innovative partnership with the school board to deliver distance learning, hired a full-time teacher and registered 21 students.
“It just shows you once people put the effort in and have a vision, this is what you can achieve as a community,” said Maria Cannon, chair of the Sun Peaks Education Society. “It’s encouraging to see.”
Cannon said they now have $53,000 in pledged funds and are taking early registrations for next year.
“Right now, we have eight additional students already registered for next year.”
The grand opening for the Discovery Centre is on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. Meeting place is at the Village Day Lodge at 9:30 a.m.
