The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is getting ready to host four free Household Hazardous Waste Round-Ups as part of efforts to help residents properly dispose of materials that are toxic, corrosive, reactive or ignitable.
The first two events take place Saturday, May 4, in Chase and Cache Creek from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Chase event will be held in the Art Holding Arena parking lot at 320 Shepherd St., while the Cache Creek Round-Up will be at the Cache Creek Visitor Information Centre at 1270 Stage Rd.
The next two Household Hazardous Waste Round-Ups will be held in Barriere and Merritt on Saturday, May 11. The Barriere event takes place at the Louis Creek Eco-Depot, 4077 Agate Bay Rd., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., while the Merritt Round-Up goes at the Civic Centre Parking Lot, 2250 Voght St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“This type of waste should not be disposed of with your regular garbage because it’s dangerous and harmful to the environment when buried in a landfill,” said Jamie Vieira, TNRD environmental services supervisor. “This is why we’re offering the free service, allowing residents to get rid of these difficult to dispose of hazardous materials.”
Examples of hazardous materials include: adhesives, aerosols, antifreeze, batteries, corrosive/toxic liquids, gasoline, kerosene, mercury and mercury containing items (i.e. old thermostats), paint, paint thinner, PCB ballasts, pesticide/herbicides, pool chemicals, propane tanks, oil, oil filters & plastic oil containers, cleaners, compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs, fluorescent light tubes, fertilizer, expired fire extinguishers, grease and tar.
