Downhill racing returns to Sun Peaks Bike Park

 | July 6, 2012

July 14 and 15 will see the return of B.C. Cup downhill mountain bike racing to Sun Peaks. The last time a professional level race was held at the resort was in 2009.

The race will take place on DH and continue into Arm Pump, and features naturally built up jumps, obstacles rocks and roots. Event organizers are expecting 200 to 300 competitors ranging from racers 15-years and under, to those over 50.

“It’s going to be a real festival atmosphere,” explains Devin Knopf, events coordinator for Sun Peaks Resort.

The weekend-long event will include a pump track race on Friday, July 13 on the resort’s newly built pump track in P5, followed by a dual slalom down Sunbeam run and film premieres on Saturday night. In addition to the race on Sunday, the Rocky Mountain Racers’ after party and foot down challenge will take place at Masa’s Bar and Grill.

“We put about 20 people on their bikes in a really enclosed space and the last one to put their foot down wins,” says Knopf of the foot down challenge. “It’s just a lot of fun, and for each round we’re going to be giving away food from Masa’s.”

Registration is open until July 14, and is restricted to riders at least 13 years of age as of December 31, 2012.
