The City of Kamloops is reminding residents of low lying areas of Heffley Creek to take protective measures as water rises with snowmelt and rain.

They have provided a stockpile of sand and sandbags at Fire Station Five in Heffley Creek near the Tolko Mill. Two piles will be available to promote physical distancing when picking up bags.

“Residents who work alongside waterways, culverts, and riverbanks are asked to stay as far back from the banks as possible and to use extreme caution,” said the city in a release on April 24. “Banks may be unstable as high-flowing water can cause erosion under the visible surface.”

Information on techniques can be found at Kamloops.ca/flooding.

Recently local states of emergency and evacuation alerts have been put in place in other areas of the province such as Williams Lake and Cache Creek.

In May of 2017 Sun Peaks and the surrounding areas were hit hard by floods which caused landslides and damaged and blocked roads. A washout on Old Highway Five in Heffley Creek disconnected the community for over a year until a bridge opened in August of 2018.
