Air travellers heading to Kamloops and area will have an improved travel experience with the completion of the Kamloops Airport’s terminal building and runway.
Upgrades include a 2,000 ft. runway extension, Canada Border Services area, seven double-sided check-in counters, expanded pre-board screening area, larger secure waiting area with new washrooms, and an expanded baggage claim area with an additional baggage carousel. The 34,000 sq. ft. terminal will allow the airport to efficiently hold 200 passengers at one time.
The airport’s overall design has been updated to reflect Kamloops’ uniqueness. T’Kemlups Indian Band art, including the Coyote Rock Cairn, has been installed both inside and outside of the building. Local pine beetle wood was used for the ceiling. To work with Kamloops’ climate, a xeriscape landscape was installed to beautify the external area of the building.
The airport is also being upgraded with state-of-the-art navigational aids to further improve safety and reliability of air service.
The federal and provincial governments each contributed $6 million to the $25 million project; the rest was funded by airport improvement fees.
MP Cathy McLeod said it “will help our region emerge from this challenging time prosperous and stronger than ever.” This echoed sentiments of other dignitaries who attended the opening ceremony on Oct. 23, emphasizing the airport’s role in making the area more accessible and boosting the local economy.
