I am sending a huge thank you to the Sun Peaks Ski Patrol for their skill, expertise and care in helping me the afternoon of March 17th, with a special thanks to Landon (Dobson) and Sam (Riggs). Although often unnoticed until needed, they are an amazing professional crew of first responders.
We see the ski patrol every day on the hill, as we enjoy the beauty and recreation that is our fabulous Sun Peaks. Their black and red jackets are on the first lift and the last. As a retired Professional Nurse and Healthcare Educator, I am aware of the hours of training and ongoing education they require to have the privilege to wear those jackets. I am also aware that being a first responder is not a job confined to ‘work’ hours only, nor is it skill alone that characterizes a competent ski patrol member. Providing care is not only a duty, but an intrinsic characteristic – you have to want to help and that trait was obviously within the ski patrol members that attended to me that afternoon.
There is a first time for everything, but falling and breaking a bone is never something planned. The ski patrol response was quick, calm and reassuring, moving me painlessly down the hill to the Health Centre in what seemed like record time.
I am so appreciative to the patrol members that responded to my call, but it is apparent that the actions of Landon and Sam are reflective of the ethos and expertise of the entire team. Thank you all for excellent service to our mountain community.
