The establishment of new ski runs on Mt. Morrisey and Tod Mountain are proceeding well, according to the Sun Peaks Resort Corporation (SPRC).
Jamie Tattersfield, SPRC mountain operations manager, said new ski runs are on track for the start of the winter season.
“What we’re aiming for is to have at least one new ski run in each area (West Morrisey and Gil’s) completely finished, and maybe more, depending on the weather,” he said.
Poor weather early in the summer slowed progress for logging operations on West Morrisey, but things are proceeding well now, with the connector run between Back in Time ski run and Mountain View Drive nearing completion.
The lower sections of the new runs planned on West Morrisey have also been cut, with SPRC recently moving the cutting equipment to the top of the hill and beginning the process of cutting from the top down.
“Most of the centre lines for these runs have been cut and we’re making really good progress on this,” Tattersfield said.
SPRC recently sent in crews to hand-fell the logs on the steeper sections of the mountain, where mechanical felling equipment is unable to reach.
In Gil’s, the layout of the new ski area has been completed and work clearing a new run has begun. Tattersfield said the eastern boundary of Gil’s, locally known as the Off-Set area, is the primary focus.
Crews are also currently working on modifications to the terrain park, developing more earth-filled features that will alleviate the reliance on snow-making equipment in the area.
A small snow-making expansion will also be undertaken on the lower section of Chute to provide more terrain for racing teams’ pre-season training.
