1. Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background.
My name is Jarrett Hofmann and I was born and raised in Kamloops, BC where I recently graduated from Thompson Rivers University with a bachelor of tourism management while focusing on adventure studies.
2. What are some of your passions and hobbies?
I am an avid backcountry skier, rock/alpine climber, trail runner, and rookie mountain biker as I just purchased a mountain bike as a graduation gift to myself. My passion (or addiction) for skiing and climbing has taken me all around the world including places like Kalymnos, Joshua Tree, The European Alps, The Dolomites, and Tonsai Beach. I like to spend my summers climbing anything from splitter cracks on granite big walls at sea level in Squamish or at altitude in Bugaboo provincial park, technical edging and overhanging sport routes on in the Okanagan, and alpine ascents in the Columbia or Rocky mountain ranges. In the winters you’ll find me storm skiing in Roger’s pass, in the lift line at Sun Peaks, or traversing coastal glaciers.
3. What is your connection to the Sun Peaks and why are you excited to write about mountain communities?
I grew up learning to ski at Sun Peaks and its where I developed my love for the outdoors. Since graduating high school I have worked at Sun Peaks as a pro patroller and volunteered with the Canadian Ski Patrol after starting my post secondary education. Sun Peaks has shaped me into the person I am today and I cannot wait to give a little bit back to the community by writing about the successes and the difficulties that Sun Peaks and other mountain communities/resort municipalities face.
4. What are some of the topics you are interested in covering during your time at SPIN? What impact are you hoping your work will have on the community and region?
During my time at SPIN I would love to shed some light on neighbouring communities to give Sun Peaks residents a better understanding of what opportunities and important adventure tourism and recreation news stories are happening within the province. My focus will trend towards adventure, recreation, and environmental/social sustainability, as I hope this will add to residents’ capacity to reflect on the impacts they have on others and their ability to maintain a healthy, active, social and environmentally sustainable lifestyle.
5. What do you want our readers to know about you?
