After last year’s fundraising drive, a new signboard has finally been installed at the Heffley Creek Hall. The signboard was an initiative of the Heffley Creek Community Recreation Association.
The 6’ x 6’ sign was installed to let people know about upcoming events in the community.
“It also has a booking number so people can get ahold of us,” said Linda Ingalls, secretary of the Heffley Creek Community Recreation Association. “We’ve been without a really good means of communication to the community. This way they’ll be able to see it from the Heffley Creek Store. The sign’s really important so the community knows what’s going on.”
The installation of the signboard is timely as the association has a number of events planned in the next couple of months.
A coffee house will be held on Fri., May 20 featuring local performer Evelyn Bedard. For the first time ever, the community is having a pig roast on June 4 with a beverage garden, raffle and a 50/50 draw. The association is planning to make the pig roast an annual community event. On June 17, another coffee house is scheduled featuring Sun Peaks duo RIPE. There’ll also be a Father’s Day pancake breakfast and tool auction on June 25.
“All these things are coming together really nicely. The committee is trying to keep the hall together for the community,” said association president Carl Vetter.
The events raise funds that support the upkeep of the Heffley Creek Hall. Some of the proceeds will also be used for legal costs to keep the hall in the community. The hall remains in the Heffley Creek Community Recreation Association’s name.
“But since (the legal proceedings) happened, there’s definitely been a lot of interest. People want it to remain in the community,” Ingalls explained. “We need it to remain in the community. Support our events. Help us fundraise.”
“We want to keep the hall because the lifeline of the community is the hall,” said Vetter.
The hall was recently used as a voting station, for census training and community recreation. In the summer, it’s been used as an emergency wildfire monitoring station.
“It’s also a much needed place (during) the wildfire season because we’ve been called upon to open the hall for an emergency master station. Our area is highly prone to fire as we all know,” said Ingalls. “We need that hall to be available when the community needs it.”
Association memberships can be renewed at the post office.
