It is difficult not to be touched by the graphic images coming out of eastern Australia these days as thousands of people have lost most, if not all they own in what is being called a one in a 100 year flood. While thankfully the death toll has been fairly low that does not negate the fact that tens of thousands of people are facing the very real and very scary hardship of starting a new life with nothing more than the shirts on their backs.

As we all know, the community of Sun Peaks has long been connected to Australia and the friendly people from Down Under and now more so than ever. I don’t think there’s a person or business in Sun Peaks that doesn’t either employee someone from Australia or have a customer or friend from Australia that’s chosen Sun Peaks as their home away from home. Now is the time to show our true Canadian colours and let them know that we care.

On January 26, 2011 (Australia Day) the team at SPIN Newsmagazine and Peaks Media Inc. are kindly asking all Sun Peaks businesses, residents and guests to join together to help raise money for those affected by these catastrophic floods.

Please take the time on January 26 to simply put a “Aussie Day Flood Relief Fund” collection jar on your businesses counter, donate proceeds from an Aussie Day special in your restaurant or shop, or even ask your employees to donate to help their Aussie work mates friends and family back home. Every dollar raised helps someone in need so let’s band together to make a difference.

All funds raised will be donated to the Premier’s Relief Fund Appeal, a registered Government charity working in conjunction with the Red Cross. The Premier’s Relief Fund has raised more than $84 million dollars to date.

All businesses or residents that donate to this cause will be recognized (if they choose to be) in a “Thank You” ad in the next issue of SPIN Newsmagazine (Feb. 23). To start the ball rolling SPIN Newsmagazine and Peaks Media Inc. will donate $200 from each company to the Aussie Day Flood Relief Fund and we encourage everyone to help wherever they can. Even $1 donated will make a huge difference to those most in need.

Let’s make Aussie Day in Sun Peaks a day full of cheer, festivities and most of all a day of giving back to all those that need our help.

Please contact us if you would like to donate to this cause.

How you can donate:

You can donate by cash, make a cheque out to SPIN Newsmagazine with Aussie Day Relief Fund on the cheque or donate directly to the Premier’s Relief Fund in Australia at  www.qld.gov.au/floods/donate . If you show us a receipt of direct donation we will include your name in the SPIN thank you ad.
