Paddle Surfit showroom opens

Paddleboarding - Photo by SPINBusinesses in Sun Peaks have a new neighbour this summer. Bodie Shandro, owner of Paddle Surfit operated on nearby Heffely Lake, has opened a showroom in the Residences at the Sun Peaks Grand, next door to the Tourism Sun Peaks offices.

“It’s going to be great having a presence in the village,” said Shandro. “The biggest reason for this is the demand. Many people take lessons with us and then want to buy a board. This is a convenient location.”

Shandro also noted summer business in the resort is growing and it means increased exposure for retail, as well as tours and lessons, and will also bring new faces into the village.

“We’re seeing a lot of growth,” said Shandro. “Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and not just the fastest growing water sport.”

With the rise in popularity also comes market saturation. According to Shando, there are now many SUP options to buy, including from big box department stores.

“We are the only professionally dedicated SUP shop in the region,” said Shandro. “And we only sell product from industry leaders. They’re not an increased cost exponentially as you get way better quality that could last your entire life.”

Currently operating by appointment only, Shandro said he plans to reassess the need for dedicated staff throughout the season.
