One of the old Tod Mountain traditions is being revived this weekend for the 50th Anniversary of Sun Peaks Resort. The Penguin Belly Slide takes place Sunday, February 19 and is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
Contestants are provided with penguin suits to race a three lane slalom course in teams of three, ending with a belly slide across the finish line. Points will be awarded for placing, but flamboyancy will also be factored in by the judges.
The inaugural Penguin Race took place at Tod Mountain in 1984 and ran for six years on the old Burfield T-bar run. The 2012 race takes place on Lower Sundance Mountain, a perfect location for spectators to take in the action.
Registration begins in the Village Day Lodge at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning and there is limited space for participants. All participants must be 19 years or older. The entry fee is $15 per person, plus a valid lift ticket.
