Provincial election announced for late October

Premier David Eby calls provincial snap election for Saturday, Oct. 24, cites tariff stressors as election focus.

British Columbia residents will be going to the polls Saturday, Oct. 24 after premier and New Democratic Party leader David Eby called for a snap election Tuesday, Sept. 22, dissolving the legislature.

Eby cited ongoing tariff stressors from the United States and a need to support local industry as the cause behind the snap election, which will take place only one week after general local elections wrap Saturday, Oct. 17.

The election comes less than two years after the previous October 2024 provincial election was held, which saw Ward Stamer from the Conservative Party of BC elected as the MLA for the Kamloops-North Thompson district, which includes Sun Peaks.

Candidates have until Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. to submit their nominations for official approval.

Advanced voting will take place Friday, Oct. 16 to Wednesday, Oct. 21, and vote by mail package requests must be submitted online or by phone by Sunday, Oct. 18. District voting locations will be confirmed before advanced voting begins and location notifications will be sent out to registered voters with more details.

You can register to vote or update your voting information such as home address at ElectionsBC.gov.bc.ca.

Official voting day is Saturday, Oct. 24 and the final count will be tallied starting Friday, Nov. 6.

New and re-elected members will return to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in Victoria Wednesday, Nov. 18.
